Rent an allotment at Lisnavagh
Lisnavagh House is as famed for its
extensive gardens and historic plants as it is for its beautiful setting.
And this year, budding gardeners have the opportunity to grow their own
allotment in Lisnavagh’s 19th Century walled garden.
‘Grow Your Own’ Allotments are very much in vogue these days
as people strive to save money and eat healthier food – and it is
a straightforward business. With just a little work, you can grow extremely
nutritious crops and one of the joys of allotment gardening is being able
to share knowledge (and seeds) with other gardeners, enabling you to overcome
unexpected obstacles and end the season with a hearty harvest.
‘The soil in the Walled Garden is extremely fertile’,
says Emily Bunbury of Lisnavagh. ‘For 160 years a host of fruit,
berries and vegetables have been produced from here every year. Renting
out allotments is part of our overall strategy to generate a new sense
of green fingered energy on the Lisnavagh estate at large’.
Bounded by a wall over two metres high, the garden is sheltered from wind,
frost and rabbits. The shelter raises the garden temperature by several
degrees, creating a microclimate that permits vegetables, herbs, seasonal
fruits and a wide range of plants to thrive.
Each allotment plot at Lisnavagh is freshly rotovated and measures 500
sq feet in size. Water and compost are provided free of charge.
